Trail head Location:
Turn west on Whitney Portal Road at the traffic signal in the center of Lone Pine. Drive 3½ miles and turn left (south) onto Horseshoe Meadow Road. Continue 20½ miles to the trail head which is 3.4 miles west of the pack station on the north shoulder of the road. The trail head is well marked.

Dates open:
Usually from late July through October, depending on the snowpack.

Type of camp:
Backpack 4½ to 7.2 miles on a moderate to a strenuous trail.

Permits:
Forest service wilderness permit. No campfires.

Highest elevation reached:
12,385 feet

Comments:
Purify water, watch for bears and pack out all trash.
