- Francois Guindon was born March 22, 1622 in France, probably in the parish of St-Pierre-du-Marthay in the village of Loudun. He married Marie Molet (Molle), who was born Oct. 8, 1623 in the same parish and was the daughter of Louie Molle (b. abt 1600) and Anne Chatelaine. There were three branches of the Guindon (also spelled Guedon) family in the town - one specialized in making hats and bonnets, another branch were shoemakers, and the third were butchers. Francois, whose occupation is listed as Butcher Master, was a member of the third branch of this family. He died at the age of 61 in Loudon on Jan. 22, 1684, and was followed by Marie, who died Jan. 6, 1704 in the village of her birth. They had several children, all born in Loudun, who are listed below.
- children - GUINDON
- Joseph Guindon was born Feb. 16, 1652/53.
- Pierre Guindon was born March 19, 1653/54; and died before 1662.
- Francois Guindon was born 14 Jan 1656/57; and died before 1665.
- Marie Guindon was born 11 May 1658; and probably died an infant.
- Marie Guindon was born Nov. 25, 1659.
- Marguerite Guindon was born Sept. 11, 1660.
- Jean Guindon was born Feb. 2 1660/61 in Loudun, France; and immigrated with his younger brother Pierre to Canada, probably sometime after 1683. Apparently, Pierre was injured or sick at least three times, as he is listed as a patient at a hospital (Hotel-Dieu) in Quebec in 1689, 1693 and 1696. Apparently, he decided to go back to France about 1696. Whether he survived the voyage home is unknown.
- Pierre Guindon (1662-1733) who follows:
- Charles Guindon was born Oct. 24, 1663.
- Francois Guindon was born March 14, 1664/65.
- Pierre Guindon (Guedon) the son of Francois Guindon and Marie Molet, was born Sept. 24, 1662 in the village of Loudun, Chatelleraut township, in the Poitiers Diocese, Vienne department of the Poitou-Charentes region of France. His godparents are listed as Pierre Guiguard and Francine Baudais. Pierre and his older brother Jean, both of whom were butchers, left the Saint-Pierre-du-Martay Parish in Loudun for "New France", as French Canada was called, when Pierre was 21. They are said to have left France "due to religious wars and pestilence." Next, we hear that Francois Hazeur, who supplied laborers in Quebec, hired Pierre on Aug 6, 1688 to work at a water mill under construction in la Malbaie, at the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec. Although many others immigrated with Pierre and Jean from Loudun to "New France", mainly to Acadia in the Maritime provinces, Pierre is said to be the only one who stayed - the others returning to France as a consequence of the British occupation of Acadia during the first phase (1689-1697) of the French and Indian Wars. Pierre's brother Jean may have been one of those who left, or possbily he perished, as the last that we hear of him is that he was hospitalized in Quebec at least three times between 1689 and 1696.
A pre-arranged marriage agreement records that Pierre married Catherine Rouchellet-Braza (b. c.1679) on Nov. 21, 1706 at the Notre Dame Church in Montreal, the capital of Quebec, which would have been around the time of the next phase of the wars with the British (1702-1713). A translation of the document by Patricia McCarron Guidon reads, "The twenty-first of November one thousand seven hundred and six after publication of the bans and a dispensation for the other two obtained from Monsignor Francois Vachon of Belmont Grand-Vicaire and Monsignor of Quebec, and there being no objections the parish of Ville-Marie (Montreal) after having obtained mutual verbal consent from Pierre Guedon aged forty two years son of Francois Guedon and Marie Molet his father and mother of the Parish of St. Pierre de Loudun of Poitiers, on the one part, and from Catherine Breza aged twenty seven years Widow of Geoffroy Vincelet dit La Boessiere of this parish on the other part, having married them according to the rites of our Holy Mother in the presence of Dominque Phillipe de Rene Gatchet surgeon, and Ignace Breza brother of the bride, of Joseph Cartier son of Nicolas Perthuis and many other relatives and friends of both parties. The bride and groom have declared being unable to sign (i.e., they could not read or write)."
Catherine and Pierre had three children (listed below), all born in St-Francois-de-Sales (a parish) on the Isle de Jesus, a small island in the St. Lawrence River where it flows through the city of Montreal. Catherine apparently died in childbirth on Aug. 22, 1710 on the Isle delivering their third son. A few months later on February 15, 1711, Pierre signed a marriage agreement with Anne Charbonneau, the widow of Guillaume Labelle, that was witnessed by Senet the notary public. However, this agreement may have been cancelled, as the wedding is not recorded in the church. Pierre died September 26, 1733 and was buried the next day in the St-Francois-de-Sales cemetery.
- children - GUINDON
- Jean Guindon was born Sept. 15, 1707 on the Isle de Jesus in Montreal, Canada. He married Madeleine LaBelle on the Isle on Feb, 14, 1728/29; and had at least 10 children with her. He died in May of 1775.
- Pierre Guindon was born July 6, 1708 on the Isle de Jesus in Montreal, Canada.
- Paul Guindon (1710-1748) who follows:
- Paul Guindon, the son of Pierre Guindon and Catharine Rouchellet-Braza, was born Aug 21, 1710 in St. Francois parish, Ile de Jesus, Montreal, Canada, and was christined the same day. His mother died delivering him. He married Marie-Josephte Aubert-Aube on the Isle on Nov. 16, 1733. Marie, who was born in 1713, was the daughter of Charles Aubert and Marie Anne Gariepy. Paul died Oct 5, 1748. He and Marie-Josephte had at least 10 children, all born in Quebec, who are listed below.

He married Marie-Anne Charboneau on Sept. 30, 1776 in Terrebonne (St. Benoit?), Quebec. Marie-Anne, who was born June 17, 1761, was the daughter of Jean Charbonneu (b. 1720) and Marie Angelique Des Sureux (b. 1727). The dates of Joseph and Marie's deaths are not known. They had at least three children, all born in Quebec, who are listed below.
- children - GUINDON
- Joseph Guindon
- Pierre Guindon (1796-1880) who follows:
- Angelique Guindon (b. 1800).
- Pierre Yandow (Guindon), the son of Joseph Guindon and Marie-Anne Charboneau, was born 1796 in St. Therese de Blainville, Terrebonne, Quebec. He married first Genevieve Proulx in St. Therese on Jan. 11, 1830, possibly honoring an agreement dating July 23, 1818. Genevieve, who was the daughter of Jacques Proulx and Genevieve Cadieux, died in St. Therese less than two years later on Nov. 1, 1831. Pierre then married Marie Hortense Rochon on Nov 25, 1833 in St Therese. Marie, who was the daughter of Antoine Rochon and Marie des Jardins, had been born in Canada sometime between 1804 and 1809. Marie and Pierre moved their family from Quebec, then known as Lower Canada, to Essex, Vermont, probably sometime after 1856, possibly following their son John who may have been boarding or working for a family there. They appear to have Americanized their family name about this time, as was the custom among the French-Canadian community, by changing the spelling from Guindon to Yandow. Pierre died in Essex on Aug. 20, 1880 and was buried in the St.Francis-Xavier Cemetery in Winooski, Vermont, where his tombstone records his name as Pier Yandow, and his age as 81 years (he was actually 84). Marie-Ann died in Essex on March 10, 1885 and was buried in the same cemetery as her husband, where her tombstone records her name as Ortanse Rochon, the death date as March 11, 1885, and her age as 76. The uncertainties in their ages and the spellings of their names might indicate that they did not read or write, at least in English.
- children - YANDOW (from the second marriage with Ortanse Rochon)
- Vital Yandow was born 19 Nov. 19, 1835 in St. Therese, de Blainville, Quebec; and married Justine Racine on Nov. 19, 1852 in Granby, Quebec. He died Nov. 1 1931 in Essex, Vermont. Vital and Justine are the great-great grandparents of Robert A. Yandow of Vermont, whose web page is the source for much of the information on the Yandow family.
- David Yandow was born Nov. 7, 1836 in St. Therese, de Blainville, Quebec; and died May 13, 1908 in Essex, Vermont.
- William Yandow was born in June 1837 in Quebec; and died Feb. 3 1912 in Burlington, Vermont.

- John Yandow, the son of Pierre Yandow and Marie Hortense Rochon, was born Apr 20, 1844 in St. Therese, de Blainville, Quebec. He apparently left Canada for the United States with his family in 1856. He married his first wife Philomene Bordeau (Bourdon) on July 2, 1866 at St. Joseph Church in Burlington, Vermont. Philomene, who is listed as Pila in the U.S. Census of 1870, was born about 1846 in Highgate, Vermont, and was the daughter of Pierre Bordeau and Emerance Goyette of Burlington. She died on Dec. 4, 1880 at the age of only 34, after having at least 8 children with John. He married his second wife Virginia Parizo (Pariseau) on May 1, 1881 in Winooski, Vermont, and had another six children with her. Virginia was born Ovt. 11, 1854 in Whitehall, New York. John in 1882/83 was working in Essex as a sawyer and carpenter at the lumber mill of Samuel Brownell. He died on Feb. 27, 1910 in Williston, Vermont and was buried in the Holy Family Cemetery in Essex. An obituary for John appeared in the Feb. 10, 1910 edition of the Burlington Free Press. Virginia survived him a few more years. She died Jan. 30, 1927 in Williston, and is buried in the same plot as her husband. John's children with Philomene and Virginia are listed below.

Although Ellen's maiden name was actually Yandow, the name having been Americanized from Guindon by her French-Canadian grandfather when he emigrated to the United States, she changed it to the more French-looking spelling of Yandeau. She and Henry left Vermont for California sometime before 1900, where he started a livery stable company with two of his brothers. Henry died in Los Angeles, California on March 10, 1926, and Ellen died there on Oct. 11, 1943 and is buried in the Calvary Cemetery. For the children of Ellen and Henry, please see the CARTY GENEALOGY.

- This lineage is based largely on information from a well-referenced website on the Yandow Family by Robert A Yandow of Vermont, who in turn relied heavily on information provided by Dr. A.E. Lamberts of St. Lambert, Quebec, and Laverne Atchison, editor of the "Guindon Newsletter, as well as correspondance with various cousins, and his own research of local Vermont sources. Another website with some useful information is one on the Guindon Family by William H. Dunwoody, which appears to have drawn in large part from Robert Yandow's site, yet includes some additional information. Both of these sites were up and running in October, 2008.
